“Step up, stand up and speak up loudly” was the message on Pink Shirt Day, February 27, when students and staff sported pink shirts in the hallways of M. E. LaZerte High School, in Edmonton. Besides wearing pink, students listened to guest speakers, watched an antibullying awareness video and made pledges against bullying behaviour at the school assembly. Pink Shirt Day originated in Nova Scotia, in 2007, when a Grade 9 male student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. The next day, many students at his school wore pink shirts to show their support for him.
